However, several statements in this review require important context because they do not accurately reflect the information provided before the charter or the reasons certain decisions were made during the day.

On June 14th, nearly one month before the July 11th charter, Edgar was provided with a detailed written itinerary outlining the planned destinations and the approximate travel times. As I do with every client, I believe in complete transparency so guests know exactly what to expect before they arrive.

The itinerary specifically stated that the travel time from the marina to Balandra Beach is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, while the travel time to Espíritu Santo Island is approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. These are the standard travel times from our marina and are communicated to every guest well in advance.

On the day of the charter, the destination options were discussed once again with the entire group. After approximately one hour underway, the adults discussed whether they preferred to continue to Espíritu Santo or spend more time enjoying the water at Balandra Beach. The overwhelming majority of the adults chose Balandra so they could maximize their time swimming, paddleboarding, and relaxing rather than spending additional time cruising. One member of the group preferred Espíritu Santo, but the itinerary ultimately reflected the preference of the majority. The yacht travelled at its normal cruising speed, consistent with the speed used on all of our charters and by similar yachts operating in the area.

Throughout the day, my highest priority was guest safety, followed closely by protecting the yacht itself.

One issue involved guests repeatedly entering the interior cabin while soaking wet. Several children were still wearing saturated life jackets that were dripping large amounts of water onto the carpeted interior. The yacht has a swim platform and cockpit specifically intended for guests to dry off before entering the cabin. Asking guests to use those areas before entering the interior is a reasonable request intended to protect the vessel from unnecessary damage. Just as most people would not walk soaking wet through the carpeted interior of a vacation rental or hotel, the same courtesy is expected aboard the yacht.

Another issue involved guests jumping from the yacht. Several adults began jumping from the upper flybridge without first asking permission. Jumping from that location is not permitted because it presents an unnecessary safety risk and potential liability. Shortly afterward, a young child appeared ready to do the same. He was immediately told that he could not jump by himself. Because he had watched the adults jump and became upset, one supervised exception was made, allowing him to jump a single time while holding an adult’s hand.

Later, guests asked for permission to jump from the side of the yacht. This request came only after several adults had already jumped from the upper flybridge without permission. At that point, I had to exercise reasonable judgment. Refusing the request outright after the adults had already jumped from a much higher location would likely have created unnecessary conflict. I therefore permitted jumping only from the much lower side of the yacht, where I considered the activity significantly safer and where it could be closely supervised. Guests were allowed to take turns jumping into the water and climbing back aboard, and everyone who wanted to participate had the opportunity to do so. After some time, however, as the yacht moved with the waves while anchored and several very young children—some appearing to be only four or five years old—continued participating, the activity was stopped. That decision was made solely in the interest of safety.

Before departure, another safety concern arose regarding hydration. The group consisted of 17 guests, including nine children, and had brought only 24 bottles of water, each approximately 550 milliliters, for an eight-hour charter in temperatures approaching 40°C. Based on years of experience operating charters in these conditions, I believed it was my responsibility to recommend purchasing additional water before leaving the marina. Once we reached our destination, returning to the marina would take approximately two hours if someone became dehydrated or additional supplies were urgently needed. This recommendation was made solely out of concern for the health and well-being of the guests, particularly the children.

Our goal on every charter is to provide a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience. We work hard to communicate expectations clearly before every trip and to make informed decisions throughout the day that prioritize guest safety while protecting the vessel entrusted to our care.
