The Xavelha boat that sailed from Câmara de Lobos to Lisbon to represent Madeira at Expo 98.
Built in 1936, the São João de Deus is one of Madeira's most historic Xavelha boats. For decades, it worked as a tuna and swordfish fishing boat in the waters of Câmara de Lobos, the island's greatest fishing village. But its story goes far beyond the Madeiran sea.
Years later, the São João de Deus was chosen to represent Madeira at Expo 98, the International Exhibition held in Lisbon, making the Atlantic crossing from Câmara de Lobos all the way to the Portuguese capital. A historic voyage, aboard a traditional boat with nearly six decades of life on the water.
Around eight metres long and able to accommodate up to ten people, the São João de Deus is today the boat that takes you to discover Madeira's southern coast like never before, from Funchal to the imposing Cabo Girão, with all the authenticity and history that only this boat can offer.
Sailing aboard the São João de Deus is not just a boat tour in Funchal. It is stepping aboard a living piece of Madeira's history.
