- Background
- With parents as members of the San Diego Yacht Club in the early 60’s, I was introduced to sailing at an early age when my father would provide boat deliveries up and down the California Coast. I’m a 5th generation San Diegan and Point Loma native, and have dived, surfed and sailed the surrounding Southern California and Baja area for over 40 years, I have extensive local knowledge of the Point Loma San Diego area enjoy club racing as well as crewing on other boats. Back in Jr High, my friends and I would often ditch school and “Borrow” a stray Catalina 27 and set off towards the Coronado Islands hoping to return in time to escape detection by the boat’s owner, as well as our parents. We would often “play race” with a friend’s 67’ Ketch “The Wizard of Bristol” against Dennis Connor’s “Freedom” when Dennis and crew were busy practicing for the 1980 Americas Cup in San Diego Bay, much to the irritation of both racing crews I would imagine. “We would actually pull away going upwind against Dennis until they turned at the mark and put their spinnakers up… Four teenagers out there close hauling this huge Ketch alongside these beautiful America’s Cup Boats in the bay. I’m sure we annoyed the hell out of Dennis and the other boats that were out there practicing, but we didn’t know any better at the time. My wife Manisha and I own a restored vintage IOR Ranger 37’ named ‘Masquerade’ berthed at Marina Cortez and run a private san diego bay sailing charter service for “Wounded Veterans Foundation and people visiting San Diego. I’m currently a Staff Commodore for Point Loma Yacht Club and a member in good standing at Silver Gate Yacht Club. I am a USCG licensed Master 100 Ton Captain, a Certified Scuba Diver, and Surfer.
